Learning that keeps students coming back

Diplo is an educational platform for students with different learning speeds, needs and levels of independence. The challenge was to keep students engaged without making learning feel overwhelming, and to give parents and teachers better visibility into progress.

What I did

Key contributions

01

Turning progress into motivation

I designed the experience around visible progress, challenges, points, leagues, avatars and rewards, giving students smaller reasons to continue. The goal was not to turn education into a game, but to make progress easier to recognise and more motivating.

02

Supporting different learning needs

Accessibility and adaptability were part of the product from the start, not added after the UI was finished. They shaped navigation, hierarchy, feedback and how progress was communicated, and created a foundation for further personalisation. League changes, for example, are shown with an icon, colour and text - never colour alone.

03

Giving parents visibility into progress

I designed a parent dashboard where parents can follow their child’s learning activity, engagement and progress, without interfering with the student’s own learning experience.

04

Building one system with the development team

I worked with front-end, back-end and marketing throughout implementation: reviewing feasibility, creating reusable components and carrying out UX/UI QA as the MVP was built, all on one shared Figma design system.

Trade-offs

Motivating, but never distracting

Rewards had to be noticeable enough to motivate students, while the learning content stayed the main focus. Teacher workflows, where teachers oversee AI-supported exercises, and more advanced rewards were planned but left for later phases, so the MVP could first validate the core experience.

Outcome

Deliverables

  • An engagement model based on progress, challenges and rewards
  • Foundations for different learning speeds and accessibility needs
  • Parent-facing progress and visibility features
  • A reusable design system for continued development
  • One visual direction across UI, development and marketing
  • Used by 400+ students
